The promise that was shattered
Social media was supposed to be a global space for creativity and dialogue. We were promised digital commons where everyone could share their voice and connect across borders. What emerged instead were platforms built for control, engineered to maximize attention at the expense of well-being, and that have divided us more deeply than ever before.
These platforms are driven by advertising systems that reward outrage and dependency. They tune feeds not for meaning, but for maximum engagement; exploiting dopamine loops, dark patterns, and algorithmic amplification of extremism. Creators lost fair compensation. People became products users. Our data, our attention became the commodity.
Within these models, creators lost autonomy and audiences lost agency. Opaque algorithms decide what we see, hiding the mechanisms that shape our beliefs. Democracies have eroded under waves of coordinated manipulation, disinformation, and foreign interference. Truth itself has become contested territory.
And today, in this era of generative AI, new threats have crept in: cheap, scalable deepfakes, synthetic content flooding our feeds, and cognitive warfare waged at industrial scale. No visual-first platform governed as public-interest infrastructure exists. No credible alternative to Instagram or TikTok is aligned with democratic values. The gap is structural, not incidental.
